View Full Version : concerned about my nav
I just started out a new design, but I was a little concerned about the nav.. I only have a graphics file http://spots.flatland.com/fudog/45.jpg the thing is, My eye always catches the sub menu instead of the main menu. Can any one help me out as to find a better way to integrate a menu into the new design? or is it okay?
sorry about that.

your link doesn't work.

which one is ur main menu?
i assume ur submenu is the side bar on the left right?
if that's the case, make ur submenu background color a lighter shade..so won't attract the eyes as much to that location...right now it's too dark in contrast, so it becomes ur main focus...
bring up the tone on ur middle graphic...so the user's eyes focus on ur main nav when entering ur page....
hope that helps!
nice design by the way!

okay, I switch the colors for main menu and the sub menu and lightened the tone in the pic. There must have been a major problem if you're asking me what's the main menu? <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle> but I can't trust myself anymore, I've already trained my eye, and I need someone elses opinion. I will soon turn the graphic into a webpage, so that might help.
btw, do you think it would be a good idea to rearrange the placement of the menus? if so, where?

oh, and the main menu is at the very top, it says "FuDOG, design, thoughts, profile.
Here's the web page, very sloppy coding done in dreamweaver, but I've got better things to do on my vacation :D http://spots.flatland.com/fudog/Untitled-1.htm I'm trying to fix the menu problem. the drop down dissapears too quickly on site tools. anyways, I wanted the menu items to be done in graphics to get thicker letters, but I got jagged, ugly graphics with all the transparency. Is there a way to get afont-weight in between bold and normal using regular text? or maybe a way to make the transparent images better? thanks.
overall looks much better.. : )
as for the transparency, if u don't intend to use the main menu images elsewhere (as in another layout), u can skip the transparency and make the main menu separate gif images with the background intact...
on the html page, just lay them out in a table like putting a puzzle together..they should stack up really smoothly...without any seams....

thanks, but here's the thing, I want the main graphic/menu background to change for each page, so transparency is my best choice, I'd really like to have transparent images for the buttons, but if I'm left with no choice, I guess I'll just have to make rollovers for each background change.
Also, do you know how to fix my drop down menu problem. Whenever you put your mouse over on Site tools, the menu always disappears too quickly.

If you want to use text instead of graphics there are multiple levels of bold available:
http://www.devguru.com/Technologies/css/quickref/css_fontweight.html
The one problem is that the different weights can be displayed differently on different browsers, so if you want 100% consistance you are stuck with a graphic.
The menu does look better now that is has been revised. The higher contrast did the job of attracting your eye to the main menu rather than the sub menu.

... And knowing is half the battle ...
Thanks for the help, netscape in a pain in the ass, what do you guys think, stick with the graphics, or is the text ok?
