Ok, i have a couple things.... First off, if anyone out there uses Brinkster, do you know if SSI will work on their servers? If so, how do I make it work? And what about CGI, can I use that on their servers? They have been of no help in answering my questions...
Second, does anyone know of a good, fast host that supports these things (SSI and CGI), preferably with an FTP upload, and no ads(!)? I know it sounds like Im asking a lot, but I need this! Thanks yall...

Brinkster allows SSI within ASP pages, I don't think they allow CGI in the form of PERL or C.
As regards a host that:
is good
is fast
supports SSI and CGI
allows FTP access
has no adds
: I think you may be being a bit over optimistic in free servers.

yeah, I have to agree.. from my experience from the web, fast and free don't mix. but f2s.com is the closest to what you're looking for, the only problem is, they're sort of slow and unreliable at times.

as I saw f2s.com is currently down for new users they've got problems with their servers...

profile.prototype.simu=function(){
this.email=[url="mailto:simuk@freesurf.ch"]simuk@freesurf.ch[/url:yieko0vl3s];
this.url=[url:yieko0vl3s]http://www.simu.ch.vu[/url:yieko0vl3s] || [url:yieko0vl3s]http://www.retedesign.ch.vu[/url:yieko0vl3s];
return this
}

OK, I can deal without a blindingly fast host... But I do need FTP, SSI, and CGI... In regards to Dan's post: I dont know ASP... How would I include SSI in an SSI page? DO they just parse anything with a .asp name? In that case, I will just do some renaming...
Thanks...

And if no one knows of any, what is a good, inexpensive host?

anders

not sure how reliable or good they are, but they are cheap, that's for sure :
http://www.webhostingmania.com/index/0
also supports php/perl/cgi but no asp

http://instantwebsitedesign.net/
cheap and supports everything ur heart desires and more... seems reliable service but don't let it's ugly site design scare u away...

I just want to mention that brinkster only alown 16 MB of stream a day and 500 BM a month (on their free membership) !

This means you can only use 16 MB of bandwith a day ! If you have a page (lets say 100Kb), that page can only be viewed 160 times a day ! If you exeed the 16 MB that day, you will see a "Sorry the bandwidth for this member had been exeeded, please come back later"-message !!!

And i'm only talking about 1 page, so if you have multiple pages (ofcource you do) or flash-animation, or applets, or ... FORGET IT !

I have tried it a few years ago, and it's still the same !
If you want to get it right (fast and reliable) you have to pay !

Sorry my friends ....

Sailor: If you name a page .asp you can then use SSI without any special commands.

FuDog: pupius.net is hosted here in Sheffield - I get unlimited emails, webspace and bandwidth, plus a Dialup number for about £150 a year. EndoFlow's hosted in Manchester for £50 a year.

FuDog: instantwebdesign provides all the support u need for php,cgi,perl,asp,etc...
as for ftp,u will need ur own ftp application, and fill out ur own domain transfer forms(at network solutions)..it won't do the process for u...but for that low price..they give a bunch of stuff already :)
as for hosting, i just recently changed to http://www.liquidweb.com ...so far happy with it...but not as cheap as the others...
for NY hosts, maybe do a search on yahoo for "webhosting new york" and it should give u a list of local hosts...

sailor420: yes, one of the mods in here uses that host...and so far, he haven't had any complaints, i believe.... it should be a good choice...
