DHTML Layers

I am writing a script that involves making a layer visible and then running additional code after the layer is visible to the user. I need the layer to be visible before the code that follows begins executing. The problem is that the layer does not become visible until after the code has finished. Is there a way in DHTML to force the layer to be visible before any code following this executes? I haven't had any luck trying to refresh the layer.
